Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google — known as the Big 4 — we encounter in many facets of our lives. But they didn’t get there alone. They collaborated with and acquired hundreds of companies over decades to propel them to become some of the most powerful tech behemoths in the world.

They all seem to follow the same pattern: First, they became dominant in their original business (grey curves), like e-commerce for Amazon and search for Google. Then they grew tentacles, making acquisitions in new sectors (green curves) to add revenue streams and outflank competitors.

The growth along these principles was reported by the Washington Post showing growth in original and new areas by acquisitions (https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/interactive/2021/amazon-apple-facebook-google-acquisitions/ )

The study shows the acquisition history of these 4 Tech companies over time, giving insight in their strategies.

An overview of the acuisitions can also be found in: https://www.economicliberties.us/big-tech-merger-tracker/ of the American economic liberty project.
